Sixty Life-Resolutions For My Sixtieth Birthday
March 22, 2013
Fred A. Hartley, III
- Be it resolved that I will live in the present and not in the past. As good as it has been, I forget what lies behind in order to take hold of what yet lies ahead. I renounce the pride of accomplishment.
- I embrace the Kingdom virtue of flexibility and resolve to become less brittle, less stuck in my old ways, and more ready to receive new ways.
- I will walk in humility and in the fear of the Lord. I renounce the spirit of entitlement.
- By the grace of God, I will fear no man.
- I will labor everyday with the energy that God abundantly supplies.
- I want to win the prize. I don’t simply want honorable mention. I renounce soft choices and middle-aged concessions.
- I will be as zealous to tear down and demolish idols, high places and Asherah poles as I was when I was younger.
- I will continue to grow in righteousness, justice and mercy. There is yet much room for improvement.
- I will get sweeter. I renounce the crusty, old man within me and welcome the sweet, kind, gentle Spirit of Christ.
- I renounce any pride in these pitiful sixty resolutions. If I was a more fit servant, I wouldn’t need them.
- Be it resolved that there are yet more mountains to conquer.
- I will celebrate Sabbath, declaring God’s work is more important than my work because He is God and I am not.
- I resolve to listen more and talk less.
- I resolve to laugh more and stress less.
- I resolve to appreciate more and criticize less.
- I resolve to pray more and strive less.
- I resolve to praise more and complain less.
- I resolve to empower others more and exert less.
- I resolve to talk about Jesus more and myself less.
- I resolve to give more and take less.
- I resolve to believe God to do more and for me to do less.
- I resolve to love Sherry more, to praise her, cherish her, win her, serve her, appreciate her, romance her, pursue her, care for her, provide for her, bless her, empower her, champion her and protect her with all her crowns, bridges, and dental implants notwithstanding.
- I resolve to maintain a spirit of adventure. By the grace of God, you will never hear me use excuse, “ I’m too old.” Never.
- I will use the perspective of age to teach me wisdom – to number my days and make the most of every opportunity.
- I resolve to never travel alone – whenever possible to bring others with me.
- I resolve to empower my forty mighty men.
- I resolve to never force open a door that God has shut – and to never assume a door is shut just because it looks that way.
- I resolve to pray new prayers and bigger prayers.
- I resolve to grow in faith – to work my faith muscle more than my biceps, triceps and quadriceps.
- I resolve to read aloud these sixty resolutions monthly.
- I resolve to always be mentored.
- I resolve to love people – to appreciate, respect, value and learn from them.
- I resolve to never miss an opportunity to practice an act of kindness.
- I resolve to love each of my children – all eight of them – as if there were only one of them - to call forth the best in them, to free them from any spirit of control, and release them like arrows to hit the bull’s eye and to bring down enemies.
- I resolve to not change what is working well and, at the same time, consistently upgrade.
- Be it resolved that I will grow to more accurately discern truth from error and to honor the holy.
- I will not use false weights and measures nor evaluate people according to standards that do not apply.
- I resolve to more forcefully advance Christ’s Kingdom each year.
- I resolve to more effectively utilize the Lord’s prayer pattern each year.
- I resolve to champion the uniqueness of each of my grandchildren and affirm their calling and protect their destiny.
- I resolve to verbally recognize that every new day is one more than I deserve.
- I resolve to honor my mother.
- I resolve to feed and meditate on God’s word day and night – to delight in His Word.
- I resolve to be myself in Christ – to not pretend to be someone else.
- I resolve to start each day with the mindset that I will do ONLY what I see the Father doing.
- I resolve to praise God always, every day, any way, every way.
- I resolve to learn new songs.
- I resolve to utilize new technology.
- I resolve to meet new people.
- I resolve to go to new places.
- I resolve to read new books.
- I resolve to ask new questions.
- I resolve to go from teachability to teachability.
- I resolve to go from receptivity to greater receptivity.
- I resolve to go from hunger for God to more hunger.
- I resolve to go from fruitfulness to fruitfulness.
- I resolve to go from blessing to blessing.
- I resolve to go from strength to strength.
- I resolve to go from fullness to fullness.
- I resolve to go from faith to faith.
- I resolve to go from glory to glory.
